P.S. 132 Hosts A Clothing Drive!

We are excited to announce P.S. 132 is currently hosting a Clothing Drive, which began on April 22, 2009 and will conclude Friday, May 22, 2009. Currently, our Pre-Kindergarten classes are engaged in a thematic unit of study on, Clothing. Both teachers and students learned that 386 million pounds of textiles enter the NYC waste stream annually, representing close to 6% of total waste. In an effort to reduce clothing in landfills, while helping raise funds for non-profit organizations, the Pre-Kindergarten teachers reached out to Wearable Collections. Wearable Collections provides a no cost, turn-key solution to recycling clothing within buildings in NYC. They handle all the logistics from placement of bins and promotion within the buildings to scheduling weekly pick-ups. This new partnership has made it more convenient for parents and students to discard their unused clothing. Wearable Collections distributes your discarded clothing around the world to people who need it, enabling them to raise money for charitable organizations. Continue your Spring cleaning, and send in any unused clothing with your child! We appreciate your constant support and dedication to our school's community service efforts!

We would like to invite the Kindergarten parents in to assist with exciting investigations using the five senses. Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten Begin TADA!

I am proud to announce the launch of TADA in grades Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. Throughout the next 8 weeks, your child will engage in chorus, movement & theater instruction, thanks to our partnership with TADA. During our first planning session with our teachers and the TADA musical artists, it was decided to study Broadway musicals. The Pre-Kindergarten will learn music and choreography from The Little Mermaid, and our Kindergarteners will engage in music and dance instruction from Mary Poppins. In order to ensure our culminating performance is a true success, a letter will be sent home shortly requesting your assistance with costume design and props. As always, I know I can always count on your support and dedication to our school. Until next time........

The Winter Attendance Blues......

Although the cold winter season is here, please remember it is our students' responsibility to be in school every single day. Yesterday's snowy weather prevented a lot of children from coming to school. The only class to have 100% attendance was Mrs. Claro's Pre-Kindergarten class, Pre-K 112. We were so AMAZED at their efforts, that the entire class received a cool memo pad to use in school or at home! Way to Go!
Please note, the February Winter Recess is from February 16, 2009 -February 20, 2009. We realize the importance of enjoying family time together, however we hope that you understand that all students are required to return to school on February 23, 2009. As an incentive, the classes that have 100% attendance on Friday, February 13, 2009 and Monday, February 23, 2009, will be entered into a raffle to win a special class trip.
